MESSERSCHMITT-GIGANTEN und der Fliegerhorst Regensburg-Obertraubling 1936-1945

The Messerschmitt "Giants" were the aircraft in the Second World War that made it possible to transport heavy artillery, lorries and even tanks by air for the first time in the history of aviation. With its 55 metre wingspan, the "Gigant" towered over all other aircraft in the German air force. First as the Messerschmitt Me 321 cargo glider and later as the six-engined Me 323 transport aircraft, the "Giants" were in service from 1941 onwards, almost until the end of the war.

Whenever crisis situations arose on the fronts, whether in the Mediterranean in 1943 or on the Eastern Front in 1944, the Me 323s were at the centre of the action. The last delivery of an Me 323 from Obertraubling took place in April 1944. The history of the Regensburg-Obertraubling airbase is inextricably linked to the "Giants" Me 321 and Me 323. At the end of 1944, the airbase was once again the centre of attention when the Me 262 was ready to fly in. The Me 262, a giant of speed, was the first operational jet fighter and the fastest combat aircraft in the Second World War. No other Luftwaffe airbase was so involved in industrial aircraft production and was bombed as often as the one in Regensburg-Obertraubling.

This book provides a historical overview of a chapter of recent German history. The appendix contains numerous new, previously unpublished photos.
