The Fieseler Fi.156 "Storch" is one of the most iconic German aircraft of World War II. It saw its first combat in Spain during the Civil War, serving with the Condor Legion. Capable of flying at 50 km/h and landing at 40 km/h, thanks to its high-lift slats along its entire leading edge and slotted flaps, it became the greatest success of Fieseler-Flugzeugbau, due to its widespread use as a STOL (short takeoff and landing) aircraft.

The surviving aircraft of the Condor Legion were given to the Spanish, who incorporated them into the newly created Air Force. The high regard the pilots had for these planes led to an order being placed with Germany for twenty of them in 1943, with nineteen being received by 1944.
