Alas Sobre Espana No 60: Polikarpov I-16

ALAS SOBRE ESPANA Series, Book No 60: POLIKARPOV I-16 - ''Moscas'' y ''Ratas'' en guerra

The Polikarpov I-16 was one of the most iconic and representative fighters of the Spanish Civil War. Nicknamed "fly" by the Republicans and "rat" by the Nationalists, it was present on almost every battlefront and engaged in epic battles against enemy CR-32s and Bf-109s.

The first batch of these Soviet fighters, with 31 I-16s, arrived in Spain in October 1936, turning the defense of Madrid around and greatly reinforcing the government's air power.

In total, 157 of types 5 and 6 and 136 of type 10 were received. The latter from the summer of 1937 onwards, being numbered consecutively with the code CM (Fly Fighter).
