The Army Lineage Series is designed to foster the esprit de corps of United States Army units. Intended for use at all levels of command, in service schools, and in training programs throughout the Army, the volumes published in this series to date have become standard reference sources in the field of organizational history.

INFANTRY, Part I: Regular Army appeared in 1972 as a revised edition of the first infantry lineage book published in 1953. The narrative portion of the volume is a brief but thoroughly researched organizational history of the United States Infantry from the American Revolution to the war in Vietnam. The linages that follow include all Regular Army infantry regiments organized under the Combat Arms Regimental System. Among them is the 3d Infantry, which this year (1984) is celebrating the 200th anniversary of its original organization as the First American Regiment (from the book's foreword).
