THE SUBMARINE DELFIN - The first torpedo attack in world history
This publlication forms part of the ongoing effort of the Hellenic Maritime Museum to high-light lesser-known, yet essential, aspects of our maritime history -facets connected with processes of transition, experimentation, and experience, elements that are integral to every historical development. The Submarine "Delfin" occupies a distinctive place within this trajectory. As the first Greek Submarine, it marked the entry of our Navy into a new and, at the time, uncertain mode of naval warfare. Despite its limited operational capabilities and the technical challenges that accompanied it, "Delfin" embodied a new way of thinking and a bold strategic choice, the significance of which can be fully appreciated only in retrospect. The study presented to the reader does not seek to idealize the past, or to confer retrospective glory upon events that unfolded under conditions of experimentation and uncertainty. Rather, it aims to shed light on the historical context, the technical realities, and -most importantly- the human dimension of the early Submarine experience, through the use of primary source material and well-documented analysis. The Hellenic Maritime Museum believes that such approaches contribute substantially to a deeper understanding of our maritime heritage. For history is shaped not only by outcomes, but also by the efforts that preceded them; by ventures that, albeit not fully successful, paved the path for what followed. With the conviction that this publication offers a balanced and meaningful contribution to the study of Greece's naval past, we hope that it will serve as a stimulus for further research and constructive reflection.
