The Heinkel 59 flying boat was the basic equipment of German naval aviation units in the early months of World War II.

The He-59 saw its first combat use during the Spanish Civil War (1936–1939). Although the Condor Legion aircraft that operated with the Nationalist side during the Spanish Civil War were predominantly land-based, a detachment conducting maritime operations was also included.
