The T-26 light tank was the standard infantry tank of the Soviet Red Army during the 1930s and the most produced Soviet tank of the interwar period. In fact, it was manufactured in greater numbers than all other tanks in the world combined during the 1930s. The T-26 was a licensed copy of the British 6-ton Vickers light tank, but with a Soviet-designed turret and gun. Due to the nature of the fighting, the T-26 was the main type of tank sent to Spain during the war, accounting for 281 of the 331 sent by the USSR. The T-26 was not ideal for infantry support; it had very thin armor and was vulnerable to contemporary anti-tank guns. However, the T-26 had a significant advantage in firepower, as it was armed with a dual-purpose 45mm gun.
