The Macchi M.18 was a single-engine, pusher-propeller sesquiplane flying boat that was conceived in the early 1920s with the civilian market in mind, based on the experience gained by the firm during the Great War.

The fledgling Spanish Naval Aviation looked to Italy to acquire its necessary seaplanes, the Savoia and the Macchi. The latter began as training aircraft, but ended up taking part in combat missions during the Rif War in the 1920s, deployed from the seaplane carrier "Dédalo" in bombing raids and tactical support for Spanish troops against the Rif rebels in the Spanish Protectorate of Morocco.
